Kabob House & Gyro: My Favorite, but Have You Seen My Dad Recently?

The Best Kabob in Stockton? Yep.

To start off the blog, we have my favorite restaurant in Stockton. I'll admit, when you walk in, you won't be impressed.

Lime Green Walls and Napkins

It's highkey ugly. The small dining space, minimal decor, and lime green accent wall aren't going to win any "Best Decorated Awards in Stockton." My guy the owner decided not to grab those plastic sheets with the checkered patterns -- yeah, the ones from the cheap Italian restaurants, that are somehow always sticky and feel like they haven't been clean in a few decades-- so I think he deserves some props there. Shouts to you my guy. Double shouts for keeping plain white tables with napkin dispensers. No lie, dispensers are becoming rarer in restaurants, so I'm always happy to see them. I'm not about to blame anyone, but I see your kids at the McDonald's, wasting napkins. It got so bad, the McDonald's next to the Food4Less, on Lower Sac, stopped leaving them in the dispensers. So they have these giant ass napkin dispensing towers next to the drinks now, but without anything in 'em. Naw.

So far, you're probably thinking, "Aye yo, I dun wanna eat here," but they have napkins. Keep that in mind before you disrespect me. You also have to understand, as someone who comes from "Mediterranean people," the locale's stripped down aesthetic doesn't bother me -- and it shouldn't bother you. If you're in Stockton, you know most of our restaurants are ugly. Even with the super drab Araby-Greek paradox at play, people love it here. Every weekday around lunch, the Kabob and Gyro house is flooded with people from different ethnicity, having conversations ranging from child support to business over at the PG&E building to complaining about being called in for jury duty. The restaurant attracts its diverse array of dinners from its most important strength: the food.

Hallah Meats? Hella Good.

The food here is amazing. Kabobs, chicken tikka, gyros, or french fries and hamburgers for my readers who don't like taking risks, whatever it is, our owner boi has everything figured out. This is the only place in town I can order a platter of food and feel like I'm eating street food from the streets of London (I'm hella cultured btw). Portions are good too. For eleven dollars, I get enough food to satisfy my tall, obese self. My personal recommendation is the Mediterranean Plate. That order will let you try the Gyro beef, chicken, rice, pita, hummus, and a few other sides for about ten dollars. If you want something to go, the Kobab Sandwich and side of fries is my girlfriend's go to. Skip on drinks and grab that complementary water though. Otherwise, you're paying like a dollar for a can of Pebzi, and that ain't it. With that spare dollar, you might think about buying a piece of Baklova instead.

Maybe I'm biased, since I grew up eating many of the foods you'll see on the menu, but this is my favorite place in town. The food here is almost as good as my nana's cooking. If you don't like it at the Kabob and Gyro House, you wouldn't like her cooking either. That's cool. I guess.

Overall, you get great food with a serviceable venue, fine prices, good service, and to try my favorite place in town. The only problem was eating here reminded me I haven't seen my father in a long time. I know he tries to be in my life, but there's always a division between us. Maybe I feel betrayed; he promised I'd always be his son, but I've been replaced by a younger brother. My father loved napkins. He'd always remark to me, "Aye Puthu, napkins are quite enjoyable." So Mike (all the employees are named Mike, small detail) would come offering me a napkin to both wipe my tears and my mouth (I eat kind of sloppy, but I try not to be like this). I couldn't stop crying and/or eating though, so Mike would just keep offering napkins. We would we get stuck in this infinite time loop and it'd be just this big ugly mess. But then Mike decided to put the napkin dispensers on the tables. That's service, yo.

Eat Here.

I miss you Papa.
